Hero Dog Awards: Final days to vote for Mo-Mo

We’re in the final days of voting for the first round of the American Humane Hero Dog Awards. The TurfMutt Foundation’s spokesdog, Mo-Mo, is in the running for the shelter dog category.

(Update: voting closed as of May 6 at 12 p.m. PT.)

Here is an excerpt of what we submitted to the judges that persuaded them to advance Mo-Mo to the first round of voting. Your vote will help her get to the next round. We appreciate your support for Mo-Mo!

Mo-Mo is a mixed breed rescue pup and the spokesdog for the TurfMutt Foundation, which promotes environmental stewardship. The program has inspired millions of kids, families and teachers to become “backyard superheroes” by creating and sustaining suburban and urban habitat, parks, sports fields, and other green spaces.

Mo-Mo was abandoned along with her siblings and was given a new “leash on life” when she was rescued by the Kentucky Humane Society. She was adopted by TurfMutt Foundation president, Kris Kiser, during Lucky’s Mutt Madness— a national dog adoption event that takes place during GIE+EXPO, the international landscape, outdoor living and equipment exposition.

Today, Mo-Mo is an ordinary dog doing extraordinary work to advance the TurfMutt program – which launched in 2009 in a handful of Sacramento and Washington, D.C. schools and grew to reach 70 million students, teachers, and families through its education partners Weekly Reader, Discovery Education, and Scholastic.

TurfMutt’s messages are simple. Nature starts at your backdoor. “Backyarding” (the new trend to move indoor activities to the great outdoors) is good for you. And everyone can help save the planet, starting with their backyard.

Mulligan fits right into the TurfMutt Foundation family, and she’s grown into the paw prints left behind by the original TurfMutt, another rescue dog named Lucky.
