Teenagers who share a home with a dog get much more than just a loyal companion and endless cuddles โ€“ they might actually be getting a biological boost to their well-being.

A recent study conducted in Japan suggests that the secret to a dogโ€™s positive impact lies in the microbiota. Having a dog on the home, scientists say, actually alters the composition of the microorganisms in the environment.

Researchers believe these microscopic changes interact with a teenโ€™s system in a way that directly supports their mental health. The study indicates that teens with dogs reported significantly lower social issues than those in pet-free homes.
