Parents, guardians and teachers looking to give young adults an academic boost this school year can turn to the green space around them, according to a new study in Biological Psychiatry. According to the findings, exposing adolescents to green space impacts brain development, which is associated with better academic and mental outcomes.

Study Details
The research, which analyzed data from over 7,000 ethnically diverse adolescents across the U.S., reveals a powerful connection: exposure to green space is associated with positive changes in brain structure, leading to better academic and mental outcomes.

The study found that kids aged 9-10 who spent time in green spaces showed structural changes in their brains just two years later. Scientists believe this is because nature helps to reduce stress and improve focus, which in turn supports learning and overall mental well-being. This study offers a powerful reminder that the green spaces around us are more than just pretty scenery; they are vital for healthy brain development.
