A survey of over 1,000 Americans indicates that a home’s living landscape may have even more impact on a property’s perceived value than previously thought.

For a majority of respondents (90%), landscaping plays a role in their decision to buy or rent a home. More than half (57%) are searching for a large yard to landscape. And 69% of those surveyed said they would even consider purchasing a rundown or outdated home if the landscaping is already done in the yard.

Here are a few of the other findings from this survey. Do any surprise you?

  • 67% of women want a landscaped yard with trees, shrubs and perennials
  • 55% of men want a large, grassy lawn
  • 59% of millennials want a large yard to landscape
  • 35% of baby boomers don’t want a large yard
  • 40% of respondents said a yard with little to no grass – or grass that is overgrown – indicates a lower value home
  • 20% of Gen-X respondents say little to no plant life indicates a low-value home
