Moving to a new neighborhood can be a stressful endeavor for everyone in the family, including your pet. On a recent Mulligan Minute, which aired on CBS Lucky Dog, the TurfMutt Foundation shared some great tips on meeting new (dog) neighbors.

Here are a few tips:

  • Backyard Essentials: Make sure your backyard is set up for your dog with a secure fence, plenty of shade, no poisonous plants and lots of natural turfgrass.
  • Yard Introductions: Show your pet around your new yard slowly. Use an excited, happy voice and reward your dog with lots of treats and play time.
  • New Dog Introductions: Proceed with care when introducing your pup to his new pals. Avoid places that trigger anxiety, and introduce the dogs in a neutral territory like a park. Also, if one dog is on a leash, make sure all of them are to keep the introduction on a level – and safe – playing field.
  • Inside Tips: Resist the urge to get all new dog beds and toys for a little while. It will be comforting to your pet to have familiar smells in the new home. Make time between unpacking boxes to show your dog a little extra love on walks and play sessions. Your dog needs you now more than ever!
